When Engraving Isn’t Possible: Understanding Ring Limitations
Engraving Limitations: Understanding What Rings We Can't Engrave At Jewelry By Johan, we're all about helping you create a custom ring that's as unique as you are, and often, that includes a personal custom text engraving or even a custom image engraving. While our laser engraving technology is incredibly precise, there are a few ring designs that cannot be engraved. We want to make sure your engraved message is perfect and lasting, so here's a simple explanation of why some rings can't be engraved. How Our Laser Engraver Works Our specialized laser needs to sit flat and maintain a consistent focus on the inside of your ring. Think of it like drawing a straight line with a pencil. If the surface isn't flat or changes abruptly, the line will be wobbly or fade out. The same goes for our laser; if it can't get a clear, stable path, your engraving will turn out uneven or too light (engraved too shallow) to be permanent or even legible. "Top-Heavy" Ring Designs Some rings have a design where the top, with its stones or decorative elements, is much wider than the bottom of the band. We call these "top-heavy." For these unique rings, two main issues can prevent a clear laser engraving: Limited Space: The wider top can block our laser from reaching the inner band. It's like trying to get into a tight space with something large blocking the way.   Awkward Angles: The inside curve of these rings can change too sharply. This makes it impossible for the laser to stay focused, leading to distorted or incomplete inscriptions. Rings with Tricky Inner Shapes Other designs can also be challenging or impossible for our ring engraving process:   Super Narrow Bands: If the inside of your band is extremely thin, there simply isn't enough flat surface for the laser to create an engraving.   Steep Inner Profiles or Deep‐set Decorative Channels: Rings with very angled insides or deep grooves for design elements can also obstruct the laser's path, making an engraving impossible.   Wood or Antler Sleeves: Rings with any Ring Armor coating on the sleeve, where the material on the inside is protected by the coating. Mokume Sleeves: Mokume rings that contain composite materials.    Large Stones: Rings large stones can make it difficult to engrave due to the angle needed to reach the inside without hitting the stone.  We always want your engraved ring to be a cherished piece. If you're unsure whether your chosen ring design can be engraved, please don't hesitate to reach out! We're here to help you create the perfect personalized jewelry.
