Lapidary jewelry is the perfect way to tell your unique story with symbolic, beautiful stone inlays.

Jewelry by Johan's stone jewelry features lapidary inlays like turquoise, lapis lazuli, malachite, jade, onyx, and obsidian. Unlike gemstone settings found on engagement rings, these precious and semi-precious stones are shaped into the inlays of our handmade rings.
Lapidary jewelry symbolizes your connection to a geographic area. For instance, our unique turquoise rings are perfect for residents of the American Southwest, or an agate found on the shores of Lake Superior can be turned into a beautiful wedding band.
Stone Inlay Jewelry FAQs
Can I provide my own materials for my ring?
Yes, we specialize in working with customer provided materials. Whether it’s an heirloom stone, a sentimental piece of wood, flowers from your garden, or really almost anything, we’d happily put it into your custom jewelry design! We invite you to make your handmade men's ring truly personal and meaningful. We treat whatever you send in with extreme care, and we will let you know if we can use it before starting work on your custom men's engagement ring. We always return any unused material to you.
Can I use my own stones or materials in the band?
Yes, we welcome the opportunity to incorporate personal materials into your custom women's wedding bands. Most commonly, this is an heirloom stone. But we don’t just work with customer-provided stones, we’ve used sentimental pieces of wood, deer antler from hunting trips, sand or shells from beach vacations, and so much more. Get inspired by the unique materials we’ve worked with before here!
We’ve made the process of sending in any material as simple as possible for you, while giving you the confidence that we’ll handle your sentimental materials as though they were our own! To send in your stones or other materials, please click on “Sending JBJ an Item for Custom Work” on this page. You’ll get a short form to fill out, and once we process your submission we’ll reach back out with instructions on how to send us your materials for your custom ring design. We always send back whatever we don’t use.
How long does the custom wedding band process typically take?
There are two stages for making your custom wedding ring: Design and production. During design, we’d talk with you about what you’d want your dream ring to be. This would be done by email or during free consultations by phone or video. One of our customer service representatives will be your point of contact to update you on your ring or ask any follow-up questions that our production team might have for you.
Certain designs, like contour bands, require that renderings be made. This is to ensure that the contour band will fit perfectly against the engagement ring. If we aren’t making both rings at the same time, we ask that the engagement ring be sent in so we can measure it for accurate contour band renderings. These CAD renderings can take 1-2 weeks to come back depending on how many other renderings we’re making at the time, with revisions taking possibly much less time. Designs that don’t require a rendering can enter production much sooner, but these are limited to rings that have straight bands and don’t need to contour.
Once the ring enters production, it typically takes 3 to 8 weeks for it to be finished. This timeframe can vary depending on the complexity and materials needed for your custom design. Once your order is finalized, we’ll give you an estimated shipping date. If this is past/cutting it close to the date you need the ring by, let us know and we can move your ring up in the production queue. As a last resort, we can even provide you with a stand-in ring to use during your ceremony upon request.
