What to Include in Your Request
You do not need a finished design to get started. Some customers come to us with sketches or inspiration photos. Others begin with nothing more than an idea or a story they want reflected in their jewelry. The more you can tell us in the message field, the faster we can give you an accurate quote.
Details worth mentioning if you already know them:

Metal preference: gold, platinum, titanium, tungsten, or another option from our metal guide

None of this is required. If you are not sure about any of it, say so in your message and we will walk you through the options.
How the Custom Jewelry Process Works
1. You submit your request
Share your idea, materials, and any inspiration images through the form above. Nothing is locked in until you approve the design and place your order.
You can start by filling out the request form above, contacting us, or by clicking "customize" on any item.
2. We review and follow up
One of our expert design consultants reviews your details and reaches out to discuss direction, materials, and timeline. This can be through email, text, phone call, video call, live chat, or in-person.
Consultations are free and can be done virtually or in person at our Minnesota store.
Through the rest of the process, your design consultant will stay as your point of contact for questions and updates.
3. We design your piece
You'll receive a link to a private listing with your item's details. Including:
- Mockup photos or a computer rendering, if applicable
- An exact price quote
- An estimated delivery date
Your feedback guides each revision. Nothing goes into production until you approve it.
4. You place the order
Once you place your order on the private listing, you'll receive:
- A shipment of free ring sizers (if your item is a ring)
- Shipping instructions (if you're supplying any materials)
Once we have everything we need to begin (including your size and supplied materials, if applicable), we'll put your item into production and you'll receive a confirmed shipping date.
5. We handcraft it
Your piece is handcrafted by our production team in the USA, in the same building as your design consultant. They'll continue to keep you up to date on your order and stay available for questions.
When will my item arrive?
All listings (including your private listing) show their production and shipping timeline before you order.
We always provide tracking info for your package.
Production Times:
Non-precious metal items generally take ~15 business days to make. Precious metal items take ~20 business days to make. This can vary based on the item's complexity and materials.
Shipping Times:
Shipping domestically generally takes ~2 business days. International shipping times can vary more, usually taking ~5 business days.
Rush orders and free stand-in rings for ceremonies are available at any point during the process.
Your design consultant will always keep the date you need the item by in mind. If a rush order or stand-in ring is needed, they'll assist you. Your peace of mind is our top priority.
Custom Materials Welcome
Alongside the high-quality metals and stones we source, we can also incorporate sentimental materials you send us. Since 2008, our specialty has been using materials our customers supply to make truly special jewelry. Such as:
- Stones from heirloom jewelry
- Beach sand, sea shells, or soil
- Flower petals
- Wood from a sentimental tree, piece of furniture, or other item
- Antler
- Cremation ashes
And so much more!

How to Send Materials for Custom Jewelry
Sending your own material? We'll send you straightforward, secure shipping instructions when you place your order, whether it's for an existing design, a modified one, or a completely custom one.
While your material is here, we keep track of where it is at all times via a strict scanning system. It stays in a locked saferoom when not in use. Our entire team is in one design center in Minnesota, so your material never travels far after it arrives.
Everything we don't use comes back to you in the same package as the finished item.

Custom does not have to mean complicated or out of reach. Metal, stone size and type, inlay material, and design complexity all move the number, and we will walk you through where there is room to adjust. Share a range up front and we will design to it rather than around it.

How much does custom jewelry cost?
It depends on metal, stones, materials, and design complexity. That is why the form asks for a comfortable price range. We quote every request individually and at no cost, and we will tell you honestly if your design and your range are not aligned before you spend anything.
How long does it take to make a custom ring?
Non-precious metal rings take ~15 business days. Precious metal rings take ~20 business days. This can vary with complexity and materials. Production starts once we confirm your size.
What if I don't know my ring size?
Use our two-step sizing program, which is free with your ring. Production begins after your size is confirmed.
Does custom jewelry have an extra fee?
While some stores do, Jewelry by Johan does not add an extra fee for making a custom piece. Whether you are making something entirely custom or modifying an existing design, there is no customization fee.
What information do you need for a custom jewelry quote?
Your idea, in whatever form it exists. Metal preference, inlay material, stone details, and ring size all help, but none are required. Inspiration photos or sketches uploaded through the form are the fastest way to get us on the same page.
Can I use my own materials in custom jewelry?
Yes. We regularly work with customer-supplied wood, antler, meteorite, sand, stone, and cremated remains. Mention it in your request and we will confirm whether it can be used before you ship anything.
Will I see the design before it is made?
Yes. Depending on complexity, you will review mockup photos or a 3D CAD rendering. Nothing goes into production without your approval.
Can I order a custom ring online?
Yes. The full process works by email, phone, text, chat, or video. Consultations can be virtual, designs are shared as images or CAD renderings for your approval, and finished pieces ship insured worldwide.
What kinds of custom jewelry do you make?
Custom engagement rings and wedding bands with unique materials (meteorite, dinosaur bone, antler, wood, and more) are our specialty, and we also make necklaces, pendants, earrings, bracelets, cuff links, tie clips, and memorial jewelry.
What if I am not happy with the finished piece?
